This coin was issued to commemorative the life and teachings of Booker T. Washington, who was an African American civil rights leader. The sale of this special edition coin raised money to purchase and maintain his birthplace in Virginia.

The US minted the 1946 Booker T Washington half dollar with no mint mark and also the 1946 D Booker T Washington half dollar and the 1946 S Booker T Washington half dollar. The mint mark can be found on the reverse side of the coin underneath the log cabin.

There were a large number of these coins released, but many of them were melted down or found their way into circulation.
